Challenges included tricky and tight access, steep slope, unstable sandy topography which made cutting into the slope and protecting neighbouring land/structures a difficult process.
The upside was that the steep slope presented opportunity to be creative with the levels and design a series of terraced spaces including pool with glass window that flowed from top to bottom. Each space offering a slightly different view / aspect over garden and beach views beyond
Hard wearing materials such as spotted gum decking and batten fences, limestone paving, natural sandstone and white texture-rendered walls blend together to create a soft beachy palette.
Sandy soils and exposure to salt and wind dictated the plant selection – a mix of tough drought tolerant Mediterranean + Coastal Natives such as Bougainvillea Scarlet O’hara and Trachelospermum jasminoides to ramble over fences and provide flowering interest and colour, Salvia rosmarinus prostratus to trail over white walls, Podocarpus elatus to create privacy along the lawn terrace, Nerium oleander to reinforce the backdrop planting, and a mix of native Lomandra grasses, Westringia shrubs and groundcovers to fill out areas in between.
