Fairlight

Wrapping around a beautiful blue brick and sandstone bungalow, this family-oriented garden is a series of connecting spaces and details that stitch the new with the old.

The existing gardens had good bones, but the built elements were tired and in need of tightening up. The rear of the home had been renovated previously and the landscape needed to reflect the mix of classic and contemporary detailing.

Large amounts of dilapidated dry-stack sandstone walls were upcycled into random ashlar style with additional Sydney sandstone brought into site to bolster. This beautifully crafted walling forms a spine through the gardens. Starting and the front entry and arrival courtyard, the walls snake through the landscape leading the eye to explore through to the rear gardens.

A clunky set of existing steps between the garden levels were replaced with a new concrete and timber stair/seating detail to draw you out into the garden.

This mix of materials is at home in the surrounds and creates a link between the stone walling backdrop and the generous timber entertaining deck.

New sawn paving formalises the entry path and invites the visitors to the front door through the beds of mixed plantings.

Garden lighting guides the visitor along the pathways and highlights specimen plantings along the way.

Our client’s passion for plants was front and centre in creating a refreshed look and feel to the gardens.

The updated planting scheme creates interest through flowering, a variety of form and shape, and seasonal change with a mix of evergreen and deciduous plantings.

All sitting harmoniously against the style and character of the classic bungalow home

Dappled light from a carefully retained canopy tree overhead gently shades the large lawn areas. And a repurposed cubby house and trampoline complete the playground elements for the client’s young children to run wild and enjoy
